Hanbei Yoshida

Japanese: 吉田半兵衛 - よしだはんべえ

Date of birth and death unknown. Ukiyo-e artist from Kamigata in the mid-Edo period. Born in Kyoto, he illustrated Kamigata-style publications aimed at the masses, and was active from the Jokyo to Hoei periods (1684-1711). He is particularly known for his collaborations with Ihara Saikaku, who provided vivid descriptions of manners and customs in his masterpieces of ukiyo-zoshi, such as "Koshoku Gonin Onna" and "Koshoku Ichidai Onna" (both 1686) and "Nihon Eitaigura" (1688). He also produced woodblock picture books such as "Koshoku Kinmou Zui" (1686) and "Onnayo Kinmou Zui" (1687).

生没年不詳。江戸中期の上方(かみがた)の浮世絵師。京都の人で、上方版の大衆向け出版物に挿絵を描き、貞享(じょうきょう)から宝永(ほうえい)（1684～1711）のころに活躍した。ことに井原西鶴(さいかく)との共作が注目され、その浮世草子の名作『好色五人女』『好色一代女』（ともに1686）や『日本永代蔵(にっぽんえいたいぐら)』（1688）などに生彩に富む風俗描写を提供した。ほかに『好色訓蒙図彙(きんもうずい)』（1686）、『女用(おんなよう)訓蒙図彙』（1687）などの木版絵本もある。
