A mineral of hydrated aluminum sulfate. It is often fibrous, forming membranes or aggregates of microcrystals. It is soluble. When it dissolves in water and recrystallizes repeatedly, it becomes columnar crystals elongated in the a or b axis direction, but it is only found in dry climates. It is formed on the surface of mudstone containing weathered pyrite, in the oxidation zone of sulfide deposits containing pyrite, as a decomposition product of coal seams, or as a product of relatively low-temperature fumarolic or hot spring action. In Japan, it is found as a product of volcanic fumarolic action in Owakudani, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture, and on the surface of tuff in Kinasa, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. It has been reported in the oxidation zone of metal deposits from the Osarizawa Mine (now closed), Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture. It is found together with epsomite (chemical formula Mg[SO 4 ]・7H 2 O), pickeringite (MgAl 2 [SO 4 ] 4・22H 2 O), and gypsum. Identification is by its fibrous form. Very low hardness. Soluble. Magnesium scolyte and scolyte are longer fibers. These two types have a somewhat smooth fiber surface and a strong silky luster. They taste bitter when licked, but the only way to tell the difference by taste is to dissolve a small amount in water and compare, so a pure sample must be prepared. The English name is a combination of the Latin word alumen and the Greek word genos (to manufacture). 舎利塩epsomite(化学式Mg[SO4]・7H2O)、苦土毛礬(くどもうばん)pickeringite(MgAl2[SO4]4・22H2O)、石膏(せっこう)などとともに産する。 英名はラテン語のalumen(ミョウバン)とギリシア語のgenos(製造)を結合させたもの。
