Serra, Richard

Born 1939 in San Francisco. American artist. Studied at the University of California and Yale University. He held his first solo exhibition in Rome in 1966, where he attracted attention by bringing live pigs and chickens into the gallery. Many of his works emphasize randomness, which could be described as a kind of naturalism. His works, which involve burying chain links underground or randomly stacking pieces of wood, made him one of the leading figures of anti-formalism in the United States since the late 1960s. In the 1970s, he began to produce large-scale works made of assembled steel plates.
