Yoshinori Ino
Year of death: September 30, 1925
Year of birth: 9th May 1867 (11th June 1867)
A pioneer of Taiwan studies during the Meiji and Taisho periods. In 1885, he moved to Tokyo from Tono, Iwate Prefecture, to study at Nishogakusha. In 1886, he entered Iwate Normal School on a scholarship, but in 1907, he rebelled against his instructor and dropped out. He returned to Tokyo and worked as a newspaper editor. In 1901, he joined the Tokyo Anthropological Society and studied anthropology under Tsuboi Shogoro. In November 1903, he traveled to Taiwan as an employee of the Ministry of the Army, and was ordered to work for the Taiwan Governor's Office, where he investigated Taiwan's history, geography, and folklore "in order to apply anthropological knowledge to education." After returning to Japan in January 1904, he continued to research the history of Taiwan and his hometown. He guided Sasaki Kizen, and was also close friends with Yanagita Kunio. His representative work, Taiwan Cultural History (1928), is regarded as a first-class historical source for research into Taiwanese history. <References> Yutoshi Moriguchi (ed.), Ino Kanori's Taiwan Exploration Diary (1992, Taipei)
