Irving Thalberg, who would later be called the "child prodigy" of MGM, and Harry Cohn (1891-1958), who would go on to control Columbia, were producers who made their name as Laemmle's secretary. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), a masterpiece that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director in 1929-30.
