A type of labor union found in France and Italy. It was first established in Paris in 1887 and was a reformist organization with a club-like character for workers, with a focus on introducing jobs. At its peak, it had branches in the provinces and represented more than one million workers, but after World War I it disappeared with the development of public employment offices and other organizations. It did not develop outside of France and Italy. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
