Shinjuku Gyoen

Japanese: 新宿御苑 - しんじゅくぎょえん
Shinjuku Gyoen
This park straddles Shinjuku and Shibuya wards in Tokyo. Its area is approximately 583,000 m2 . It was originally the residence of Naito, the lord of Takato Domain in Shinano Province, during the Edo period, and is estimated to have been built during the An'ei era (1772-1780). In the early Meiji period, it served as a training farm for fruit trees, vegetables, sericulture, and tea production. After it came under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Household Ministry in 1879, it was used for greenhouse cultivation of flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees, and became the birthplace of horticulture in Japan. In 1901, it was remodeled into a garden under a five-year plan, and used for national events as Imperial land. After World War II, it was opened to the public as a park, and since July 1971, it has been under the jurisdiction of the Environment Agency (now the Ministry of the Environment). It is a famous garden that represents landscaping in the Meiji and Taisho periods, and has both Japanese and Western-style gardens. It is also characterized by its many chrysanthemums and greenhouse flowers, inheriting the history of the horticultural experiment station. When Emperor Showa passed away in 1989, a grand funeral was held.
