The name of a place in Shiga County, Omi Province, on the west shore of Lake Biwa. It corresponds to Shika Town, Shiga Prefecture (present-day Otsu City). The place name is said to have come from the fact that the powerful Yamato clan Wani clan was a vassal of the people here, and the person buried in the Wani Otsukayama Kofun Tumulus in neighboring Ono is believed to have been a powerful member of the Wani clan. Wani Station on the Hokuriku Road was established here, and it was equipped with seven post horses and five horses. In 841, Hosey Daihoshi of Enryaku-ji Temple stayed in Wani Village on his way to Chikubu Island to make a pilgrimage. It was also a key point for lake transportation, and in 867 the provincial governor ordered the repair of the Wanitomari wharf, which had collapsed. In 883, Wani Mikuriya was built, and the activities of niebito (sacrificial offerings) were guaranteed. In 1001, Wani Manor was donated by Taira Korenaka to the Kitain Temple of Shirakawa-dera Temple, but in 1042 the main land area was 89 cho. It later became the property of Enryaku-ji Temple, and woodcutters were provided for the reconstruction of the Konponchudo Hall, which had burned down in 1169. In 1227, Sasaki Nobutsuna was awarded the position of land steward of Wani Manor as a reward for his military achievements during the Jōkyū War. During the Edo period, the area was controlled by the shogunate's magistrate, the Ichihashi domain of the hatamoto shogunate, and the Mikami domain, and in 1651 the number of boats was 38, leading to a dispute over fishing grounds with the fishermen of Katata.

琵琶湖西岸，近江国滋賀郡の地名。滋賀県志賀町域（現・大津市）にあたる。大和の豪族和邇氏の部民が設定されていたことによる地名とされ，隣接する小野の和邇大塚山古墳の被葬者は和邇氏系の有力者と推定されている。北陸道の和邇駅が置かれ，駅馬７疋・伝馬５疋を備えていた。841年延暦(えんりゃく)寺の法勢大法師が竹生(ちくぶ)島に参詣する途次，和邇村に宿泊している。また湖上交通の要所でもあり，867年には和邇泊の船着場が崩れたとしてその修理が国司(こくし)に命じられている。883年には和邇御厨(みくりや)がみえ，贄人(にえびと)の活動が保障されている。1001年には和邇荘が平惟仲(これなか)から白川寺喜多院に施入されているが，1042年当時の本田は89町であった。のち延暦寺領となり，1169年焼失した根本中堂の再建には杣工(そまだくみ)を出している。1227年佐々木信綱に承久(じょうきゅう)の乱の戦功として和邇荘地頭職が与えられている。江戸時代には幕府代官支配・旗本市橋知行所・三上藩領などとして推移，1651年の船数は38艘で，堅田(かたた)の漁師と漁場争いとなっている。
