It was the capital of a Lao local kingdom, but historically it flourished as the capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom. The old capital was surrounded by a square wall and moat, and the provincial office and court are still located inside this, and part of the wall remains. There are many old temples such as Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Ku Tao. The commercial district is located to the east of the old capital between the Ping River and the city, and the area around the public market selling fresh food is particularly crowded with farmers from the surrounding area and foreign tourists. The newly developed area to the west of the old capital is home to Chiang Mai University and Chiang Mai Airport. Doi Suthep Mountain (1,650 meters), located about 16 kilometers west of the city, is Chiang Mai's best observation deck, and Phra That Doi Suthep Temple is located halfway up the mountain. The area around the city is fertile agricultural area, producing two crops of rice, tobacco, soybeans, peanuts, etc. Other specialty products include silk textiles, umbrellas, and paper. Traditional handicrafts such as silverwork, lacquerware, and rattan work are also produced in Chiang Mai city. [Takashi Tomosugi] A temple located within the former royal capital.
