Rule of thumb - Kikujunjo

Japanese: 規矩準縄 - きくじゅんじょう
Rule of thumb - Kikujunjo
A standard for things, actions, etc. Used to mean a rule, a principle, or a rule.

[Example] Without any reflection on themselves, they arbitrarily decide what humans are like, what society is like, what women are like, and so on, and then they create a number of rules and regulations that fit that and try to follow them wholeheartedly. [Miki Kiyoshi * Untold Philosophy | 1919]

[Example] It's not too formal, but it's not a free-for-all. That's how I like to be calm and harmonious. calm Love love If you stay in that place, you can understand the appeal of decadence, and you can have a streak of sympathy for the strictness of the rules. [Fukuhara Rintaro * Happiness in Life | 1959]

[Explanation] This is a phrase that appears in "Mencius," and it lists the names of four tools. "規" is a compass. "規" is a ruler. "準" is a spirit level (a tool for measuring horizontality). And "繝繝" is Ink Sumi rope Rope (A tool used to draw straight lines by flicking a rope covered in ink).
From this, "Kikyu Junnawa" came to mean the standard of things. The word "Kikyu" itself was created by taking a part of "Kikyu Junnawa".
Newspaper companies do not distinguish between "criterion" and "standard," and use the latter. However, the meanings of the two are subtly different.
A "standard" is something that is set out to be followed. On the other hand, a "criterion" indicates a basis, and in some cases, it does not have to be followed exactly.
Dictionaries are often thought of as the former kind of "standard," or "rules and rules." However, this is not actually the case. Dictionaries merely suggest a "standard." They are by no means arrogant "standards."
