…Robert himself returned to the Benedictine Order a year later, but the foundations of discipline and organization were solidified during the reign of Stephen Harding, the third abbot (1109-33). The order experienced rapid growth, especially after the Champagne nobleman Bernard and many of his family members joined (1112). The rules of the order, Carta caritatis (Charity Charter), were drawn up in 1114, and were imbued with the spirit of Christian charity. They elevated the ideals of monks and also served as a moral guide for lay people, becoming the new authority for the administration of the order. Although the daughter monasteries in each region were granted a wide degree of autonomy, they were inspected periodically by the mother abbot, and a strong unity was created throughout the organization by the attendance of all abbots at the annual general assembly convened by the mother abbot. …
