Gengo Owashi

…[Tahara Tsuguro] After his death, Otaka Gengo was featured in Joruri, Kabuki, and storytelling. In the Joruri Kanadehon Chushingura (first performed in August 1748), he appears under the pseudonym Owashi Gengo (also called Owashi Bungo in other versions), and in the attack scene, he is described as “…Owashi Gengo, pull the hammer down, pull the hammer down.” In Edo Kabuki, at the Nakamuraza Theater in June 1749 (Kan'en 2), Ichikawa Danjuro II played the role of Gengo under the name Odate Kumanosuke, due to his possession of a hanging scroll that had been left behind by Mizuma Sentoku, which had a poem by Otaka Gengo, “The strength to cut through the mountain (also called “pulling out”) is broken, and the snow on the pine trees.” …
