Born January 14, 1940, Ipswich. British director. Graduated from Cambridge University. Joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1965, and served as artistic director in 1968, and as principal director from 1978 to 1987. Directed Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale (1969) and Julius Caesar (1972), among others, but also produced many musicals. As a freelancer, he worked with A. Lloyd Webber on Cats (1981), for which he won a Tony Award. He also produced the hit Les Miserables (1985) for the RSC.
