The administrative center of the Häme region, located in the southwestern edge of the Lake District in southern Finland. Swedish name: Tavastehus. Population: 46,352 (2001). It developed around the 13th century Häme Castle, and received a city charter in 1638. Currently, it is not as developed as it is located almost halfway between the two major cities of Helsinki and Tampere. In addition to the castle, there is the Sibelius Memorial Museum, an art museum, old wooden houses, and it is the starting point of the tourist route from Lake Banaya to Tampere.
