Ebla - Ebla (English spelling)

An ancient city-state in northern Syria. Its existence was well known from clay tablets from the Sumerian and Akkadian periods in Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia traded with the Mediterranean coastline and Anatolia via Mari and Emar upstream along the Euphrates River, importing products and materials such as minerals, textiles, and wood that did not exist in Mesopotamia, and the Kingdom of Ebla played an extremely important role as a trading center. It is dated to 2400 BC, and was active as the central trading center in northern Syria. In 1964, Paulo Matthieu of the University of Rome began excavations at Tell Mardih, about 65 km south of Aleppo, and it was discovered that this was the city-state of Ebla. A palace surrounded by walls, stone vessels with genre reliefs, and stone votive vessels with reliefs of lions and soldiers were discovered. Most importantly, in 1975, more than 15,000 clay tablets were discovered in the palace archives, confirming its important role as a trading centre for the Kingdom of Ebla.

古代にシリア北部にあった都市国家。その存在は、メソポタミアのシュメールやアッカド時代の粘土板文書によってよく知られていた。メソポタミアはユーフラテス川に沿って上流のマリ、エマルを経て、地中海沿岸地帯やアナトリア地方との交易を行い、メソポタミアには存在しない鉱物、織物、木材などの製品や材料を輸入していたが、交易の中心地として、エブラ王国が果たした役割はきわめて大きいものがあった。年代は紀元前2400年に比定されているが、エブラ王国はシリア北部の交易センターの中心として活躍している。1964年にローマ大学のパウロ・マッティエによって、アレッポの南約65キロメートルにあるテル・マルディフの発掘調査が開始され、ここが都市国家エブラであることがわかった。城壁を巡らした宮殿、風俗図浮彫りの石製容器、ライオンと兵士を浮彫りにした奉献用の石製容器などが発見された。もっとも重要なことは、宮殿の付属文書館から75年に1万5000点以上の粘土板文書が発見され、エブラ王国の置かれた交易センターとしての役割の重要性が確認されたことである。
