Born: October 21, 1672, Vignola, Modena [Died] January 23, 1750. Italian historian from Modena. After graduating from the University of Modena, he became a priest in 1694 and worked at the Ambrosian Library in Milan. In 1700, he moved to the Modena Ducal Library, where he devoted his life to historical research. He edited the Rerum Italicarum Scriptores (28 volumes, 1723-51), a collection of medieval historical documents, and published the Annali d'Italia (12 volumes, 44-49), a history of the Italian peninsula. He is considered the father of modern historiography due to his rigorous criticism of historical documents and empirical historical writing. He was also the discoverer of the Muratorian canon.
