Nawab (English spelling)

The term is a corruption of the Arabic nā'ib (deputy), plural nuwwāb, and was used to mean a local governor (governor) in Islamic dynasties in India. It was particularly used in the Mughal Empire, but when the central Mughal power weakened in the 18th century, the Nawabs of each region gained independent political power. アラビア語 nā'ib (代官) の複数 nuwwābの転訛した語で，インドのイスラム王朝で地方長官 (太守) の意味に用いられた。特にムガル帝国で用いられたが，18世紀になってムガル中央権力が弱体化すると，各地方のナワーブが独立の政治権力化した。そのなかでもベンガル地方とアワド地方のナワーブは有名である。
