The 126th Emperor according to the Imperial Lineage. The first son of the former Emperor Akihito. His title was Prince Hiro. Born on February 23, 1960. Raised by his parents at the Togu Palace, he attended Gakushuin Kindergarten. He came of age in February 1980. He graduated from the Department of History, Faculty of Letters, Gakushuin University in 1982. His graduation thesis was "A Study on Maritime Transportation in the Seto Inland Sea in the Middle Ages." In April of the same year, he entered the university's graduate school. In October of the same year, he made an official visit to Brazil. He studied abroad in the UK from June 1983, and entered Merton College, Oxford University in October of the same year. He deepened his ties with the British Royal Family and broadened his social horizons. He returned to Japan in 1985. He returned to Gakushuin Graduate School in 1986. He was also active as a viola player in the orchestra club. In 1987, he served as acting emir for the first time in matters of state, and in 1989 (Heisei 1), upon the death of Emperor Showa, he became Crown Prince. He then became independent and moved from the Akasaka Palace to the Togu Provisional Palace. He also had an active career, including teaching as a visiting lecturer at Gakushuin University. On June 9, 1993, he married Masako, the eldest daughter of Owada Hisashi, who was then Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and on December 1, 2001, their eldest daughter, Tononomiya Aiko, was born.

皇統譜にいう126代天皇。上皇明仁(あきひと)の第一男子。称号は浩宮(ひろのみや)。昭和35年2月23日生まれ。東宮(とうぐう)御所で両親に育てられ、学習院幼稚園に入園。1980年(昭和55)2月成年式。1982年学習院大学文学部史学科を卒業。卒業論文は「中世瀬戸内海水運の一考察」。同年4月同大大学院に進学。同年10月ブラジルを公式訪問。1983年6月からイギリスに留学、同年10月オックスフォード大学マートン・カレッジに入学。イギリス王室との交流を深め、社会見聞を広めた。1985年帰国。1986年学習院大学院に復学。オーケストラ部のビオラ奏者としても活躍した。1987年初めて国事行為の臨時代行を務め、1989年(平成1)昭和天皇逝去により、皇太子となる。その後独立して赤坂御所から東宮仮御所へ転居。学習院大学の客員講師として教壇に立つなどの活躍もある。1993年6月9日に外務省次官(当時)小和田恒(おわだひさし)の長女雅子(まさこ)と結婚、2001年12月1日長女の敬宮愛子(としのみやあいこ)が誕生した。
