A city in southern Saitama prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city is a village at the mouth of the Naguri River on the eastern foot of the Chichibu Mountains, and has developed as a market town since early modern times. The Hachiko Line and Seibu Ikebukuro Line run through the city. Approximately 70% of the city area is forested, and it is a distribution center for high-quality timber (Nishikawa timber) from the Naguri River basin, with many sawmills and woodworking factories. Since the 1960s, many electrical and general equipment factories have moved in, and the city's manufacturing shipment value was 160.9 billion yen (2003). Housing development has progressed, and large housing complexes are being developed in the hills. Naguri Valley, Tenranyama, Ne-no-gongen, and Shomaru Pass are hiking spots near Tokyo. 埼玉県南部の市。1954年市制。中心市街は秩父山地東麓にある名栗川の渓口集落で,近世以来市場町として発達。八高線,西武池袋線が通じる。市域の約7割を山林が占め,名栗川流域の良材(西川材)の集散地で,製材所,木工場が多い。1960年代から電気機器,一般機器の工場の進出が多く,市の製造品出荷額は1609億円(2003)。宅地化が進み,丘陵部にも大規模な住宅団地が造成されている。名栗渓谷,天覧山,子ノ権現,正丸峠などは東京近郊のハイキング地。2005年1月入間郡名栗村を編入。193.05km2。8万3549人(2010)。
