A city in Nordland County in northern Norway. It has an ice-free port on the Ofotfjord. It is about 120 km northwest by rail from Kiruna, Sweden's large iron ore mine. The port was built in 1883 by a joint venture between England and Sweden to ship iron ore from Kiruna and Gällivare, but it went bankrupt and was taken over by the Norwegian government in 1892. In 1898, the name was changed from Victoriahafn to its current name. During World War II, it was one of the important battlefields between the German and British-French armies. It is now known as an ore shipping port and a fishing port. Population 18,736 (estimated 1992).
