A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera family, Trypetidae (= Tephritidae). Adults are small to medium-sized, with even the largest species being roughly the size of a house fly. Many species have beautiful markings on their wings, and their compound eyes shine a beautiful green or blue when alive. Adults live by feeding on nectar and the secretions of scale insects. Their ovipositor is hardened but flexible. They insert this into fruit to lay eggs. The hatched larvae feed on the inside of the fruit and grow, then pupate in the soil.
