This former town in Monou County occupies Miyato Island, an island connected to the lower reaches of the Naruse River and the mouth of Matsushima Bay in the central-eastern part of Miyagi Prefecture. The Senseki Line runs through the town. Rice is the main agricultural crop, and vegetables and flowers are also cultivated. Shallow water aquaculture is thriving, producing seaweed and oysters. Tuff has also been quarried for building materials. In April 2005, it merged with Yamoto Town in Monou County to become Higashimatsushima City. 52.04 km2 . Population 11,625 (2003). 宮城県中東部,鳴瀬川下流域と松島湾口の陸繋(りくけい)島宮戸島を占める桃生(ものう)郡の旧町。仙石線が通じる。農業では米作を中心とし,野菜,花卉(かき)の栽培を行う。漁業は浅海養殖が盛んで,ノリ,カキなどを産する。建築用材の凝灰岩切出しも行われてきた。2005年4月桃生郡矢本町と合併し市制,東松島市となる。52.04km2。1万1625人(2003)。
