Oshakujima Island

...There is a regular ferry service from Sakata Port, and from spring to autumn, the island is crowded with tourists who come to enjoy fishing on the rocks. The entire island belongs to Chokai Quasi-National Park, and together with Oshiyaku Island, about 1km offshore to the west, it is known as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. [Nakagawa Shigeru]
[Fishing and Folklore]
The three villages of Houki, Nakamura, and Katsuura all engaged in squid fishing in the summer and cod fishing in the winter, but the rice harvested on the island was only about 50 koku, and since the Edo period, it has been the practice for peddling ships to travel to the rice-producing areas of Shonai and Yuri (present-day southwestern Akita Prefecture).
