1818‐96 German physiologist. As a boy, he studied in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the hometown of his parents, but later studied general natural sciences in Berlin and Bonn. He studied under JP Muller, and opened new doors in the study of animal electrical phenomena, contributing to research on the physiology of muscles and nerves. In 1858, he succeeded Muller as full professor of physiology at the University of Berlin. In addition to science, he was also well-versed in literature, art, and philosophy, and left behind many works in these fields. One of his most notable works is Über die Grenzen des Naturerkennens (1872), which advocated agnosticism and caused a stir among materialists, and is widely read in Japan as well.
