Timur

Japanese: ティムール
Timur
Founder of the Timurid dynasty. Said to be a descendant of Genghis Khan or the son of a Turkish shepherd. He was wounded in the leg in battle, so his enemies called him Timuri Lang (Lame Timur), and in Western Europe he was known as Tamerlane. Taking advantage of the chaos in the Chagatai Khanate, he rose to power, becoming sovereign of Central Asia in 1369, and in 1370 made Samarkand his capital. His ideals were to continue Genghis Khan's work and build an Islamic empire, and he developed Samarkand into a transit market for East-West trade and the center of Islamic culture. He expanded his territory by making expeditions to Iran, Western Asia, southern Russia, and India, but died of illness in 1405 on the way to the Ming Dynasty.
