Ryuhoku Narushima

Japanese: 成島柳北 - なるしまりゅうほく
Ryuhoku Narushima

A Chinese poet, essayist, and journalist. His real name was Korehiro. He was also known by other names such as Kayu Senshi. He was born in Asakusa, Edo, as the son of a line of Confucian scholars. He succeeded the family headship and served as a tutor to the Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi, and at the end of the Edo period, he held positions such as Chief Cavalry Officer, Foreign Magistrate, and Vice President of Accounting. After Yoshinobu retired, he retired to Mukojima in 1869 (Meiji 2), did not serve the new government, and called himself a "useless person." He wrote the Sanyo region travelogue "Koubi Nikki" (1869), a European travelogue "Kosei Nichijo" (1872-1873), and the Chinese essay "Ryūkyō Shinshi" (1874), in which he freely mocked the new era's customs. After 1874, he became president of the "Choya Shinbun" newspaper and was known for his "eccentric writing." In 1877, he founded the "Kagetsu Shinshi" and published the aforementioned travelogue as well as the "Oto Shinshi" (Kyōbyō Ippan).
