Year of death: September 10, 1858 (October 16, 1858) Year of birth: Kansei 8.4 (1796) A painter from the late Edo period. His given name was Motonaga, commonly known as Tamezaburo, his pen name was Shibuchi, and his pen names included Hisan, Teibakushi, Shikuun, Tameisando, and Shukurinsai. He was born into a merchant family in Edo whose family business was purple dyeing, and in 1813, Sakai Hoitsu recognized his talent for painting and made him his apprentice. In 1814, after his fellow student Suzuki Tobei (Kaitan) suddenly died, he took over as head of the Suzuki family and became a vassal of the Sakai family, attending Hoitsu. Around the age of 40, he broke away from his teacher's style and formed his own unique world with his unique sense of color and form, as well as his unusual ideas and bold composition. His representative works include the "Summer and Autumn Mountain Stream Screen" (Nezu Museum), "White Camellias and Susukino Screen" (Fria Museum of Art), and "White Heron and Willows Screen" (Shin'enkan Collection). While sharing the somewhat decadent sentiment of Edo citizens at the end of the Tokugawa period, his works aimed for a new harmony between realistic depictions of nature and decorativeness, and also contained fresh content that led to Japanese paintings of the Meiji period. <References> Yamane Yuzo et al., eds., "Rinpa Paintings Complete Works: Hoitsu School," Kono Motoaki, "The Artistic Work of Suzuki Kiitsu" (Kokuka, No. 1067) (Keiko Nakamachi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
