Batalpashinsk until 1937. Capital of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic in the North Caucasus, southwestern Russia. Located about 90 km south of Stavropol, on the northern slope of the western Greater Caucasus Mountains, overlooking the upper reaches of the Kuban River. Founded in 1825, it was a Cossack village until 1931. There are mechanical (refrigeration equipment, radio), chemical (rubber, synthetic resin) and food factories here. There is a local museum. A branch line from the main railway line connecting Rostov-on-Don and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, runs through the town. Population: 121,439 (2010).
