This stone ancestral hall was built in the graveyard of the Wu clan, a local noble family in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, China. It is located in Jiaxiang County, Shandong Province. There used to be several stone chambers in front of the graveyard, but they were buried and scattered in the ground due to river flooding. In 1786 (51st year of Qianlong) during the Qing Dynasty, Huang Yi excavated them and built a separate brick ancestral hall, with stones bearing images and inscriptions set into the walls to preserve them. The stone ancestral hall at the entrance to the cemetery was built in 147 (1st year of Jianhe) by the four brothers Wu Shigong, Wu Liang, Wu Jingxing, and Wu Kaiming for their father. According to the Wu Liang Stele, Wu Liang died in 151 (1st year of Yuanjia), and it is known that his children built the stone ancestral hall. The Wu Clan Shrine's pictorial stones are highly regarded as valuable resources for learning about Han dynasty paintings, and their subjects range from the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors to the deeds of loyal subjects, filial sons, heroic women, and righteous warriors, as well as pavilions, people, carriages, horses, birds, and animals. They are characterized by their large depictions of people, such as dressed scholars and women with headdresses, set against simplified backgrounds reminiscent of a theatrical stage, and are valuable resources for learning about Han dynasty paintings and customs.
