Year of death: 19th May 1685? (20th June 1685) Year of birth: unknown. A tayu of old joruri from the early Edo period. His nickname and previous name was Ichirobei. He was originally a resident of Kyoto and was said to have been a screen maker for the Imperial Palace. He developed a strong voice and a first-class style, and went to Osaka to play an active role. In 1568, he received the title of Yamato Shojo Fujiwara Sadanori and was honored by being viewed by the Emperor. At one time he was also called Fujiwara Katsunori, but around 1670 he received the title of Harima Shojo, and in the original "Nihon Oudaiki" (1674) he is listed as Harima Shojo Fujiwara Yoei. It is said that he had over 100 pieces of music, and there are 20 originals with inscriptions and crests that remain. He was skilled in reciting many gold and silver stories, and was skilled in travel and scenery. He established the Harima style, which combines sorrow and pain with a strong and soft style, and was revered as the founder of the revival of Osaka joruri. Later in life, he went to Kyoto and recited "Yorimitsu's Success Plan," which was well received. He died in Kyoto at the age of 54 and is said to have been buried in Chomyoji Temple (now Chomyoji Temple), but there is no grave, as there are no death registers or posthumous writings. There are differing theories about the year of his death, with some saying it was after April 1677 (Enpo 5) and others saying it was before 1678. The influence of Harima no Jo was great, as Uji Kaga no Jo made a name for himself with a soft Harima-style storytelling style, and Takemoto Gidayu was also captivated by the Harima style and became a tayu. <References> Yokoyama Shigeru, "Kojoruri Shu, Harima no Jo Shohon" (Classic Library), commentary on "Kojoruri Shohonshu (3)" by the same author, Nishizawa Ippu, "Konjaku Sou Nenki" and Ichiraku Sanjin, "Taketoyo Koji" ("Collection of Historical Materials on the Culture of the Common People of Japan," Volume 7) (Yasuda Fukiko) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
