…Danish physicist and chemist. Born in Rudköbbing on the island of Langeland. Studied astronomy, physics, mathematics, chemistry, and medicine at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1797. From 1801 he traveled around Europe, including Berlin, Göttingen, and Weimar, where he learned a great deal about voltaic piles, which had only just been published at the time. During this time he met JW Ritter, who was researching the chemical action of galvanic currents, and became interested in the relationship between chemical affinity and electricity. After returning to Japan from Paris in 1804, he began researching electrochemistry. …
