A term used in gagaku. The Gakusho (Gakusho) was established in 948 (Tenryaku 2) as a kind of station for gagaku performers in the imperial court, but it eventually came to officially function as an institution replacing the Gagaku-ryo, which had previously been in charge of music and dance. When the Onin War (1467-77) and other events made it difficult to maintain gagaku at the imperial court, several musicians from Osaka's Shitennoji Temple (Tennoji side) and Nara's Kofukuji Temple (Nanto side), who had been engaged in gagaku at temples and shrines, were called in to supplement the musicians from the old court (Kyoto side) who had been dispersed in the late 16th century.
