The division of art history that generally refers to Nara period art is the period spanning approximately one and a half centuries from the Taika Reforms (645) to the relocation of the capital to Heian-kyo (794). This period was influenced by the new Tang dynasty, which emerged after the Sui dynasty, and saw groundbreaking developments in art as well. Traditionally, this period has often been divided into two periods, the early Nara period (Hakuho art) and the late Nara period (Tenpyo art), with the dividing line being the year 710 (Wado 3), when the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo. The idea of combining the early and late periods as Nara period art is based on the position of recognizing the consistent stylistic flow of Tang dynasty art during this period, as a product of the Ritsuryo state.
