Subotica (English spelling)

Szabadka is a city in the Vojvodina Autonomous Region in the northern part of the Republic of Serbia. Its Hungarian name is Szabadka. It has a population of 142,166 (2001 estimate). It is close to the Hungarian border. It was founded in the 16th century by Duke Subota Burlic, and was occupied by Hungary during World War II. It is the center of a rich agricultural region, and cattle breeding is popular. The beautiful Hungarian Separatist-style town hall, the art museum, the synagogue, the theater with a neo-classical façade, the Serbian Orthodox church, and the Catholic cathedral are all worth seeing. There are also factories for electrical appliances, motorcycles, bicycles, chemicals, confectionery, textiles, and other products, as well as a university, various vocational schools, and cultural and educational facilities that are only taught in Hungarian.

セルビア共和国北部、ボイボディナ自治州の都市。ハンガリー語名サバトカSzabadka。人口14万2166（2001推計）。ハンガリー国境に近い。16世紀、公爵スボタ・ブルリチによって建設され、第二次世界大戦中はハンガリーに占領された。豊かな農業地帯の中心地で、ウシの飼育が盛ん。ハンガリー分離派様式の美しい市庁舎、美術館、シナゴーグ（ユダヤ教の教会堂）、ネオ・クラシックのファサード（建物の正面）をもった劇場、セルビア正教の教会、カトリックのカテドラル（司教座聖堂）などは一見に値する。電気製品、オートバイ・自転車、化学、製菓、織物などの工場や単科大学、各種専門学校、ハンガリー語のみの文化・教育施設もある。
