Szabadka is a city in the Vojvodina Autonomous Region in the northern part of the Republic of Serbia. Its Hungarian name is Szabadka. It has a population of 142,166 (2001 estimate). It is close to the Hungarian border. It was founded in the 16th century by Duke Subota Burlic, and was occupied by Hungary during World War II. It is the center of a rich agricultural region, and cattle breeding is popular. The beautiful Hungarian Separatist-style town hall, the art museum, the synagogue, the theater with a neo-classical façade, the Serbian Orthodox church, and the Catholic cathedral are all worth seeing. There are also factories for electrical appliances, motorcycles, bicycles, chemicals, confectionery, textiles, and other products, as well as a university, various vocational schools, and cultural and educational facilities that are only taught in Hungarian.
