The Shoka Uprising

Japanese: 荘家の一揆 - しょうけのいっき

A form of peasant struggle against the tribute taxes imposed under the medieval manor and public land system. From the Kamakura period onwards, the growth of the small peasant class led to the formation and strengthening of rural self-governing organizations (sō ketsu) that demanded reductions in taxes and public duties, and the replacement of unjust manor officials and magistrates from the manor lords. The peasants who came together under the so held meetings at shrines and village halls, wrote petitions to the lords, and strengthened their unity by drinking sacred water. If their demands were not met, they would flee, repeatedly trying to achieve their demands. → Ikki

中世の荘園公領制下の貢納賦役(こうのうふやく)に反対する農民の闘争形態。鎌倉時代以降，小百姓(こびゃくしょう)層の成長により農村の自治組織（惣(そう)結合）が形成・強化され，荘園領主に対して年貢・公事(くじ)の減免や不当な荘官・代官の更迭(こうてつ)などを要求した。惣のもとに結集した農民は，鎮守や村堂などで寄合(よりあい)を開き，領主に対しての要求書である百姓申状(もうしじょう)を作成，一味神水(いちみしんすい)によって結束を強め，要求が通らない場合には逃散(ちょうさん)などを繰り返して要求の実現に努めた。→一揆
