Seven Cauldrons - Nanatsugama

Japanese: 七ッ釜 - ななつがま
Seven Cauldrons - Nanatsugama
A basaltic sea cave (Ten) located at Tokizaki, Yakataishi, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, on the northeastern tip of the Higashi Matsuura Peninsula. It is so named because the seven cave entrances look like a row of kettles. Columnar joints of basalt can be seen in the 40m-high cliffs, eroded by the rough waves of the Genkai Sea. The large sea cave is about 3m wide and high, and over 100m deep. It forms part of Genkai Quasi-National Park and Genkai Underwater Park. Nearby is Tokizaki Shrine, named after the legend of Empress Jingu's expedition to Korea. [Kawasaki Shigeru]
