A town on the south bank of the Ganges River in the northwestern tip of the state of Bihar in northern India. In 1764, the British East India Company army led by Hector Munro defeated the combined forces of Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal, and the Mughal Emperor here, establishing British rule over Bengal and India. Chausa, 12 km southwest, is the site of an ancient battle where in 1539 Bihar ruler Sher Shah defeated the forces of Mughal Emperor Humayun and forced them to retreat to the west.
