This is a masterpiece by the American essayist HD Thoreau, published in 1854. As the subtitle "Walden" suggests, it is an essay-style compilation of events from a year's worth of experiences during his experimental self-sufficient life in the woods around Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts, from 1845 to 1847. Thoreau presents a sharp theory on civilization amidst beautiful observations of nature.

アメリカの随筆家 H.D.ソローの代表作。 1854年刊。「森の生活」という副題からもわかるように，マサチューセッツ州コンコードのウォールデン湖畔の森のなかで 1845～47年に行なった自給自足の実験的生活の体験を，1年間の出来事として随筆風にまとめたもので，美しい自然観照のうちに鋭い文明論が展開されている。
