Dolphy - Eric Allan Dolphy

American jazz alto saxophonist, bass clarinetist, and flute player. Born in Los Angeles, he died in Berlin, Germany. He began learning the clarinet in 1937, when he was still in elementary school, and eventually mastered several other instruments. He joined several bands in the late 1940s, and played in the Army band for two years from 1950. He then played in the Gerald Wilson and Buddy Collette bands, and in 1958 joined the Chico Hamilton Quintet, which attracted widespread attention. In March 1960, he joined Charles Mingus' group. Around this time, he met Ornette Coleman, and performed with him on his album Free Jazz. In 1961, he performed with his own group at the Five Spot in New York, and the live recording album became a historic masterpiece. He was active in a wide range of genres, from mainstream modern jazz to free jazz, and is known for his unique sound and phrasing, which continues to garner him fame.
