A deciduous tall tree of the Theaceae family. It grows wild in the mountains throughout Japan except Hokkaido, but is cultivated in gardens for its white camellia-like flowers that bloom in summer. The leaves are alternate, elliptical, about 10 cm long, thick, leathery, and sawtoothed. The flowers are about 5 cm in diameter, do not open flat, and fall off soon after blooming. There are five petals that are wrinkled and have fine sawtooth edges. Both the sepals and petals have noticeable white silky hairs on the dorsal side. The numerous stamens are fused together into a shallow cylinder to form a single stamen. The wood is dense and strong, so it is used for alcove pillars with the bark still attached, as well as for agricultural and tool handles, potter's wheel crafts, carving materials, and firewood.
