International Institute for Social History (English: International Institute for Social History)
This is a socialist archive and museum in Amsterdam, where research activities are also carried out. Its abbreviation is IISG. It is known worldwide for its precious collection of materials related to the history of labor movements and social thought in European countries, including posthumous manuscripts by Marx and Engels. It was established in 1935 by Nicolaas Wilhelmus Posthumus (1880-1960), a professor of economic history at the University of Amsterdam, with funding from the Workers' Central Life Insurance Company in The Hague. In 1938, it purchased the party archives, including Marx and Engels documents, that belonged to the German Social Democratic Party, which had fled into exile after being pursued by the Nazis. As a result, it acquired the second largest collection of Marx and Engels documents after the Soviet Institute of Marxism-Leninism.
