A village in Kiso County, southwest of Nagano Prefecture. Population 5,015 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Kiso River, it borders Gifu Prefecture to the west. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Ogiso Manor of Takayama-ji Temple, and in the Edo Period it was a shogunate territory. The central settlements of Suhara and Nojiri both flourished as post stations on the Nakasendo road. The eastern part of the village is occupied by the Kiso Mountains, and the western part by the Hida Mountains, making it a rich forested area. Taking advantage of the vast national forests, forestry and woodworking are thriving. It is home to Josho-ji Temple and Hakusan Shrine, whose main hall and shrine buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties, and many scenic spots such as Atera Valley and Nozokido Forest Park. 長野県南西部,木曾郡の村。人口5015(1995)。木曾川上流域に位置し,西は岐阜県に接する。中世は高山寺領小木曾荘に属し,江戸時代は天領で,中心集落の須原,野尻はともに中山道の宿駅として栄えた。村の東部を木曾山脈,西部を飛驒山脈が占め,豊かな森林地帯となっている。広大な国有林をいかして,林業や木工業が盛ん。本堂や社殿が重要文化財に指定されている定勝寺,白山神社があり,阿寺渓谷,のぞきど森林公園などの景勝地も多い。
