Cowley, Abraham

Japanese: カウリー(英語表記)Cowley, Abraham
Cowley, Abraham
Born: 1618, London
[Died] July 28, 1667. Chesey, Surrey. English poet. At the age of 15, he showed his precociousness by writing Poeticall Blossomes (1633), modelled on Spenser. While studying at Cambridge, he produced Love's Riddle (38), a pastoral play, and The Guardian (41), a comedy attacking the Puritans. He was driven out of Cambridge in 1643 due to civil war, and fled to Paris in 1645, where he became secretary to Queen Henrietta Maria, a difficult diplomatic mission. In 1656, he returned to England as a spy for the Royalists, and was imprisoned. After being released on bail, he studied medicine at Oxford. After the Restoration, he was unable to achieve his ambition and retired to Chesey. He is said to be the last metaphysical poet, and is the author of The Mistress (47), an anthology of love poems, the unfinished epic poem Davideis (56), and the Pindarique Odes (56). He is also known as a master of prose, and has written Essays in Verse and Prose (68).
