A country established by the Boers on the Indian Ocean side of South Africa in the mid-19th century. It is now the Natal Province of the Republic of South Africa. As a result of the Great Trek, which began in 1835, the Boers moved to Natal and defeated the Zulus in the Battle of the Bloody River in 1838, establishing the Natal Republic. However, in order to block the Boers' access to the sea, the British sent troops to attack the Republic in 1842, and the Republic surrendered the following year. In 1845, it became a province of the Cape Colony. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
