Removal of the spleen through surgery is called splenectomy. Splenectomy is performed for the purpose of treating conditions such as rupture of the spleen due to trauma, hypersplenism resulting in a decrease in blood cells, anemia such as hereditary spherocytosis in which the destruction of red blood cells is mainly carried out in the spleen, and thrombocytopenic purpura in which bleeding becomes more likely due to the storage and destruction of platelets in the spleen.
