This is a survey book that the Edo Shogunate had Edo towns and temples and shrines write up in 1825-28 (Bunsei 8-11) about the origins of each town, temple and shrine. There were 121 books by the temple and shrine departments and 146 books by the town departments. The Shogunate began compiling the Gofunai Fudoki in 1826 (completed in 1829 but burned down in 1872, the collection of materials that survived the disaster was the Gofunai Chokyu), and had the books submitted as historical materials. The contents are detailed, but only cover the areas outside the baileys, and do not include areas inside the baileys such as Nihonbashi, Kyobashi, Uchikanda, and Kojimachi.
