Japanese: イヌマキ(犬槙) - イヌマキ（英語表記）Podocarpus macrophyllus (Thunb.) D.Don

It is an evergreen tall tree of the Podocarpus family that grows in mountain forests in warm regions and is often planted in gardens; female plants produce doll-shaped fruits (illustration). In the Kii Peninsula and elsewhere, the dialect name, which differs from the Japanese cedar honmaki by adding the character dog (inu) to the name, has been adopted as the standard Japanese name (maki). It reaches a height of 20m and spreads its branches horizontally. The bark of the trunk is brownish gray-white and splits vertically. The leaves are densely spiraled, linear lanceolate, slightly pointed at the tips, 7-15cm long, and dark green on the surface. Flowers grow in the axils of the previous year's branches around May, and male plants produce 3-5 cylindrical male flowers, 3-5cm long, on short stalks (illustration).

暖地の山林中に生え，また庭園でもよく植えられるマキ科の常緑高木で，雌株には人形の形をした実ができる（イラスト）。紀伊半島一円などで，コウヤマキのホンマキに対して犬の字を冠して区別した方言名が，そのまま標準和名に用いられた(マキ)。　高さ20mに達し，水平に枝を張る。幹の樹皮は帯褐灰白色で縦に裂ける。葉は密に螺生し，線状披針形で先は少しとがり，長さ7～15cm，表面は濃緑色を呈する。花は5月ごろ前年枝に腋生（えきせい）し，雄株では長さ3～5cmの円柱形の雄花が3～5個，短い柄につく（イラスト）。
