When people began to wear noshi (traditional Japanese formal attire), the eboshi (traditional Japanese hat) was born from the keikan (traditional Japanese cap) of the Nara period, and was worn by both nobles and samurai. Originally, it was a soft, bag-shaped everyday headgear made of black gauze or silk so that the topknot could be left intact, but in the Heian period it became painted with black lacquer, and in later times it came to be made exclusively from paper. …
