By the end of the 18th century, it was clear that the differences in properties such as malleability and hardenability between wrought iron, steel, and pig iron were due to differences in the carbon concentrations in these metals. However, it was unclear why the hardness of steel with the same carbon concentration changed when subjected to heat treatments such as quenching and tempering.
