A mammal of the Felidae family in the carnivora order (illustration). It resembles the Bengal leopard cat, but is a large wild cat found from India and Sri Lanka to southern China and Java. It is 75-86 cm long, 26-33 cm long, and weighs 8-14 kg. Its tail is short compared to its body, and its fur is coarse and lackluster. Its body is gray-brown with dark brown spots. It lives in reed thickets in low-lying marshes, on coasts and around swamps, and is a good swimmer who does not mind going into water. It mainly eats fish, crabs, shellfish, frogs, and small mammals, but has been known to kill dogs, sheep, and calves.

食肉目ネコ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。ベンガルヤマネコに似るが大型の野生ネコで，インド，スリランカから中国南部，ジャワまでに分布。体長75～86cm，尾長26～33cm，体重8～14kg。体の割りに尾が短く，体毛は粗く，光沢がない。体色は灰褐色で，暗褐色の斑点がある。低湿地のヨシの茂み，海岸や沼の周辺などにすみ，水に入るのをきらわず，よく泳ぐ。おもに魚，カニ，貝，カエル，小哺乳類などを食べるが，イヌ，ヒツジ，子ウシを殺した例も知られる。
